About

Company Overview

Strider has been a heavy civil contractor for over 30 years specializing in Roadway and Site Improvements, Underground Utilities, Bridges, Environmental Remediation, and Water and Waste Treatment Facilities. We currently perform an average of $40M of heavy civil construction each year for both public and private sector clients, predominantly in the State of Washington. Our projects range in size from less than $100K to over $20M, and with qualifications up to $65M of contract work for WSDOT alone.

Strider is committed to providing our clients with more than just construction. We approach every project as a partner to the Owner (and their representative engineers) by exploring value engineering options, identifying potential constructability issues, and being part of the solution when problems invariably surface during the course of the work. This is a direct benefit to our clients and has proven successful for our company.

Strider is a known and proven entity in the State of Washington. We have continuously demonstrated to our private and public clients our:

  • ability to perform the contracted work on time and under budget.
  • responsiveness to change and uncertainty (flexibility).
  • proactive nature relative to changes in project conditions.
  • willingness to partner in the solution (value engineering).
  • fairness in dealing with change, delay and other impacts to the project.
  • responsiveness to the political/regulatory aspects of the projects.
  • commitment to a high level of safety, as demonstrated by our Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Experience Modification Factor of 0.66.

Strider has been involved in some of the most complex projects in Washington State. In our experience the greatest opportunity to reduce cost occurs during the planning stages of a project. Strider has the experience and knowledge necessary to assist in this process. Once Strider has joined your team we can review the project from both an engineering and constructability perspective. We currently have three (3) Licensed Professional Engineers on staff and numerous resources for solving the most complex constructability issues. If you are planning a project or entering the construction phase we would like the opportunity to present our services.

Mr. Gebhardt started his construction career with Wilder Construction (Bellingham, WA) after receiving his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington (1982). In 1987 he pioneered Wilder’s environmental (more...)

remediation efforts. With rapid growth, this specialty work soon became a separate operating division, Wilder Environmental for which he was named Division Manager. With Wilder Environmental, he had full charge responsibility for bidding and constructing all remediation projects (and many large-scale heavy civil projects) with contract volumes averaging over $30 Million annually and in excess of $160 Million during his tenure as Division Manager. Mr. Gebhardt managed offices and operations in Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Alaska.

In 1996, driven by the desire for increased ownership, Mr. Gebhardt left Wilder and purchased a major share of Strider Construction (Bellingham, WA). In 1999 he became the President and General Manager of Strider Construction Co., Inc. He is also principal-in-charge of Engineering and Environmental Projects. Present heavy civil construction and environmental remediation annual contract amounts totals in excess of $30 Million, with projects all over Washington and Oregon. Principal Estimator
Darren Mullen

Mr. Mullen has been with Strider Construction since 1997 as a project manager and estimator. He has an additional 9 years of experience in the construction industry with other firms in the Northwest. Strider Construction tends to look for challenging projects with the aim of obtaining good results for both the owner and Strider.  (more...)

Working through college in the construction industry helped shape Mr. Mullen’s perspective on how a project may be approached and different ways to construct them. Mr. Mullen has been deeply involved with projects that include all aspects of utility installation, dewatering, shoring, structures, bridges, mass excavations, remediation projects, streams and river by-passes among other scopes. He has successful experience working with public and private owners. Through the estimating process several value engineering options arise and Strider presents and implements those options to owners with the possibility of costs savings, schedule acceleration, or both.  Mr. Mullen has estimated and managed projects up to 20 million dollars; his focus now is primarily obtaining and estimating work in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Mr. Mullen has developed great working relationships with public agencies and engineers, BP, BNSF and others.

Mr. Mullen enjoys the outdoors, fishing, horses, German Shepherds and family activities. He resides in Whatcom County.
